Penetrant testing

The penetrant test is a non-destructive quality control, which uses the capillary power of fine cracks on the surface of a cast in order to find them. Such cracks can be found from a width of one micrometre onwards. But the process does not offer any information on the depth of a defect. And with rough surfaces the penetrant test can also offer apparent defects.

For quality control the surface of a material is firstly cleaned and even the finest residues of grease and oils are removed. Further a contrast colour, the so called penetrant is applied. After a reaction time, which is different for each material, the surface is cleaned again and a developer is applied on the surface.

This material, which is mostly a fine-grained powder with a strong colouring contrast towards the penetrant, has a high absorbent capacity and it extracts the remaining penetrant from the cracks. Due to the intense colour difference also the finest cracks and their structure on the surface of the tested cast can be identified.

According EN-standard 1371-1 penetrant testing is also referred to as PT-test.
